 Disposal Alternatives

The most costly aspect of hazardous materials handling is disposal.

DISPOSAL REGULATIONS FOR SATURATED USED P.O.L. Sorb®®

There are many regulations that can affect the disposal of used P.O.L. Sorb®. Regulations differ from state to state, county to county and landfill owner to landfill owner. Currently California, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey and New York do not allow the disposal of used absorbents in sanitary landfills. All absorbents and used absorbents are collected for incineration or deposited into a "hazardous waste" landfill. In time, most states will have the same regulation. The regulation for disposal of non-regulated waste (i.e. motor oil and other non-regulated waste), states "If there is a presence of hazardous material then the waste is not acceptable for sanitary landfill and needs to be properly disposed of by incineration or in a hazardous waste landfill".

Some states also regulate the parts per million of contamination in the used absorbents. The regulation can vary from 100 PPM to 10,000 PPM. P.O.L. Sorb® will lower and enhance biodegradation depending on: what is absorbed, the length of time before disposal, and the atmospheric conditions. Generators of the waste need to determine if their waste stream is hazardous or non-hazardous. Most states have a ten pound rule which regulates the disposal of ten pounds of hazardous waste in a specific time period (either 10 lbs in a day, a week, or a month). The ten pound rule is intended to help regulate the small generators. Most large factories will not fall under the ten pound rule and will conform with some type of pre-determined disposal program.

As of now all other states allow used absorbents in their landfills, provided the used absorbents meet the following criteria: The liquid absorbed must be a non-regulated, non-hazardous waste for disposal in hazardous waste landfills. In some cases, the used absorbent must be able to pass the Paint Filter Test to determine the "absence" of a free liquid. It must also be classified as a non-biodegradable absorbent where it cannot degrade and release the liquid it originally retained. The saturation level for P.O.L. Sorb® is one pound of product per one gallon of used motor oil to pass the Paint Filter Liquids Test Method 9095. This ratio will differ with the viscosity of the oil absorbed. The lower viscosity oil will need more product and a thicker liquid will need less product.

P.O.L. Sorb is the best product available because of MONEY. The initial expense is comparable to current sorbents, including clay. Companies save money by less man hours used to clean spills, less damage done by particles in the air, less liability (due to lighter product and no health hazards associated with P.O.L. Sorb®) and less expensive disposal costs. Cleanups are faster and easier than before. No heavy bags to carry around with warnings of health hazards on the side. Disposal cost is where P.O.L. Sorb® separates itself from all other products. For example, in our sample illustration provided, a 55 gallon oil spill would result in 5 - 55 gallon drums of used clay to clean up that spill. It would take 1.2 - 55 gallon drum to dispose of the used P.O.L. Sorb® for the same spill. That's a savings of over 300% in disposal costs. The average user would reduce their disposal costs by 90% when switching from clay to P.O.L. Sorb®.
