This is handbook is a basic guide for spill
response. It is NOT a comprehensive reference for environmental protection.
After cleanup, these items must be disposed of in accordance
with local, state and federal regulations.
General Spill Procedures if a spill occurs:
Consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) on file in the area for the chemical spilled if the hazards are not immediately known.
1. Place barricades or obstacles, including peat pads and socks around the area of the spill to prevent persons from tracking through the spilled material and to prevent the spreading of the spill.
2. Call for assistance.
3. Put on gloves and goggles.
4. Pour the peat moss loose particulate from the bag in the kit around the spill and/or inside the booms to start the absorption process.
5. Add absorbent as needed to contain the spill. When the peat moss is fully saturated with hydrocarbons, it will appear dark and wet. If there is still dry peat, it will
6. Sweep or scoop up the contaminated absorbent and place it into the disposal bags.
7. Dispose of the product properly.
REMEMBER:
P.O.L. Sorbฎ peat moss absorbents:
- S Suppress flammable vapors on contact
- S Can absorb any hydrocarbon, gas, diesel, oils, inks, paints, etc.
- S Require only ONE pound of product per gallon of oil sorbed.
- S Are less expensive to dispose of
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Be prepared to respond immediately to any spill situation. Keep your Units Environmental SOP and Spill Response Plan (SRP) readily available at the main HM/HW areas. The SRP should ensure that the following measures are implemented, if not then implement them yourself:
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) - At the entrance of every HM/HW area, keep a supply of PPE to protect hands, eyes, skin, ears, head, feet and lungs. If you are unsure about which items you need, consult the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for the HMs that you are using.
MSDS - Make sure that MSDSs are available in order to REACT to spills safely and effectively.
SPILL STATIONS - Maintain spill response equipment at a station near (not inside of) HM/HW areas. They should contain: First Aid Kits, Fire Extinguishers, Spill Response Kits, and Emergency PPE.
