Army, Air Force and EPA Produce Pollution Prevention Video

By Tim Blume
Western Regional Environmental Office

The U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colo., the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Region VIII have jointly developed a pollution prevention training video. This effort is expected to help each agency achieve its respective environmental goals while saving scarce resources.

The three partners jointly funded and developed this video for use by various organizations at Fort Carson, within the Air Force Academy and throughout the EPA. Through this cooperative approach, the partners shared experiences and production costs, rather than each developing a tape independently.

This video training tool is intended for use by civilian and military agencies studying or developing pollution prevention initiatives. It is also expected to be used throughout U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), the U.S. Air Force, and in EPA pollution
prevention training workshops. The video is intended to promote cooperation on interservice environmental programs and showcase pollution prevention programs before a wide audience. The goal is to increase military members' awareness of, and participation in, existing pollution prevention programs.

The design and production of this and similar training tools demonstrates the Defense Department's commitment to implementing pollution prevention as a vital part of its environmental stewardship mission.

The video takes the viewer on a tour of Fort Carson and the Air Force Academy, showing alternating examples of pollution prevention projects -- ranging from motor pool initiatives to examples of hazardous materials tracking and management.

Fort Carson uses the video primarily to train environmental protection officers assigned to units at the installation. These specialists present the training to the soldiers of their respective units.

Fort Carson environmental managers hope the tape will inspire soldiers to develop and implement pollution prevention ideas of their own. Fort Carson's Directorate of Environmental Compliance and Management plans to supplement this effort with a similar
training video that focuses on the "pharmacy" system for managing hazardous materials.
