Oil Pump Prevents Shop Spills During Oil Changes
Elmendorf AFB, Alaska
From: Leading the Way Toward Pollution Prevention and Improved
Environmental Management. The Interagency Pollution Prevention Initiative steering committee.
The 3rd Transportation Squadron at Elmendorf AFB (3TRNSS/LGPM) has developed a simple solution to prevent spills occurring from oil changes. They now have a system which
allows them to perform a closed tranfer of oil from the oil pan to their 55-gallon used oil accumulation drum. They do not have to drain the oil into a drip pan. A cleaner shop, fewer spills, less waste, less manpower, and reduced disposal costs make this smart system a great success story.
Objective:
Reduce spills resulting from oil changes.
Process:
Use a pump/extractor, which attaches to the oil pan using a hose and a quick-connect adapter. The pump draws the oil out of the pan and into a portable reservoir unit which is easily moved to the used oil accumulation drum.
Results:
Reduces spill potential. The closed transfer of oil prevents spills from oil pans and receptacles. The shop floor is also less oily.
Reduces required manpower. 3TRNSS/LGPM estimates that the time required to perform an oil change has dropped from two men at half an hour, to one person job that takes about 10
minutes.
Reduces disposal costs. The money that used to be spent sending out about 500 pounds of oil soaked clay a month, at a cost of around $9,000 per year in disposal fees, is saved.
The equipment costs less than $1,000 resulting in a quick pay-back period.
Used oil can be burned for energy recovery or recycled.
